SFI Agroforestry Funding Paused but CS Higher Tier Remains

Defra have announced a stop to future SFI funding and are expected to review the offers over the next year. This is not only concerning for wider agriculture but specifically affects agroforestry as some popular options are now closed for new applicants.

Despite only recently being introduced, the SFI offer AGF1 (Very Low Density) and AGF2 (Low Density) are no longer available to apply for. Those applicants who were able to submit in time will have their offer completed as usual. The decision to close applications for these offers further enforces concerns around long-term commitment to funding for sustainable farming, a particularly pertinent issue in relation to agroforestry projects.

There are, however, still several funding opportunities available through Defra. The PA4 Agroforestry Plan is still a welcome opportunity, as are the related Countryside Stewardship Higher Tier and Capital Grants for agroforestry. The Higher Tier option in particular offer more densities and a longer commitment period compared to the previous SFI offers.

Further details on current funding availability can be found both on the Defra website via links above and on our Policy page.
