Organic Agroforestry: Ecofunctional Intensification

The meeting commenced at Holmewood Hall, Holme near Peterborough, with talks by Professor Martin Wolfe (Organic Research Centre/Wakelyns), Paul Burgess and Oldrich Vylupek (Cranfield University), Emily Durrant (The Bulmer Foundation), Adrian Morley (Forest Farming UK), Robin Walter (Trees for Transition), Bill Bealey (CEH) and Stephen Briggs (Abacus Organics Associates).
  • Martin Wolfe. Organic agroforestry: ecofunctional intensification.
  • Paul J. Burgess and Oldrich Vylupek. Modelling of cider orchard intercropping.
  • Emily Durrant. The HONE project: novel approach to grower-centric learning and technology transfer as part of a strategy for more sustainable top fruit production in the West Midlands.
  • Adrian Morley. Comparing the sustainability within UK agriculture: agroforestry’s potential.
  • Robin Walter. Trees for transition to a low carbon future.
  • Bill Bealey. Agroforestry for ammonia abatement.
  • Stephen Briggs. Introduction to Whitehall Farm.

 

A further series of talks were presented at Wakelyns Agroforestry, Fressingfield, Suffolk. These were given by Andy Goldring (Permaculture Accociation), Steven Johnson (The Architecture Ensemble), Roger Cozens (Greenacres Consultancy), Ted Green (Ancient Tree Forum) and Ian Lane (Ian Lane Associates).

 

 
  • Andy Goldring. Eco-functional intensification of orchards: forest gardens and the Permaculture Design Approach.
  • Steven Johnson. Land-based architecture – localism by necessity.
  • Roger Cozens. Forest based products as a tool for economic development of Community Forest User Groups in Dolakha, Nepal.
  • Ted Green. Putting working trees (pollards) back into contemporary agriculture. 
  • Ian Lane. International perspectives on tree fodder.
